Connect Third-Party Hosting to GoDaddy Domain Name

GoDaddy is one of the industry leaders in domain registration and web hosting providers. You can see many tutorials on connecting a domain name purchased through GoDaddy with their hosting space.

However, it is not the case when connecting a cheaper third-party reseller hosting space to GoDaddy domain names.

This article explains the detailed process of pointing a domain name registered through GoDaddy to a third-party web hosting space.

For hosting a WordPress site, always go for Managed WordPress-Optimized Hosting plans.

Let me explain the entire procedure with an example. I purchased a domain name Asksiju.com from GoDaddy. Instead of hosting the blog with GoDaddy, I chose a different WordPress-optimized hosting provider.

In this tutorial, you will learn how I connect the domain name Asksiju.com with my WordPress-optimized hosting space.

How to Point a GoDaddy Domain to Another Shared Host?

  1. Log into your GoDaddy account

Visit the following link to access your GoDaddy account.

    https://www.godaddy.com

    Click on the Sign In.

Log into your GoDaddy account using the customer ID and password.

If you have enabled 2-step verification on your GoDaddy account, they will send you a confirmation code.

They will send the verification code on either the registered mobile number or registered E-mail address.

I highly recommend you activate 2-step verification for your domain registrar account.

Enter the verification code to complete the 2-step verification process.

  2. Go to the Products Page

After Sign In, go to My Account. Click the My Products link to view all your GoDaddy products purchased( domain names, hosting plans, E-mail accounts, etc.).

Under Domains, go to the domain name you want to point to the third-party (reseller) managed WordPress hosting.

  3. Go to Manage DNS Page

Locate the domain name you want to point to the hosting account by another company.

Go to the domain address under the Domains heading.

Click the three vertical dots as in the screenshot below.

    Click on Manage DNS.

Now we will go to the page where we can change the default nameservers with the nameservers provided by the hosting provider.

A Nameserver points the Domain name of your WordPress blog to the hosting server.

By default, GoDaddy has their Nameservers for your domain name. You need to change that with the Nameserver addresses provided by your web hosting company.

  4. Change Nameservers on DNS Management Window

Now you are at the DNS Management page. Scroll down to view the DNS Records and Nameservers.

Have a look at the screenshot. You can see the default GoDaddy nameservers are for WWW.ASKSIJU.COM.

Currently, my domain name points to the default nameservers.

    The default GoDaddy nameservers are:

    ns31.domaincontrol.com
    ns32.domaincontrol.com

Just like it, you will see default nameservers for your domain name.

So, how can you change the default nameservers set by GoDaddy on your domain name?

It is a simple task. Click on the Change button under the Nameservers.

  5. Enter the Hosting Nameservers

GoDaddy will show you a warning message when you click the Change button.

Have a look at the screenshot below. You can see two different options in the message. Either you can choose to “Connect my domain to a website I’ve built” or “Enter my own nameservers (advanced)“.

To add a third-party web hosting account nameservers, you should click the link “Enter my own nameservers (advanced)“.

Where can you find the hosting server Nameservers?

You can find the nameservers of your hosting server on your welcome mail received after you purchased the hosting plan.

Go to the E-mail account registered with your hosting account. You can see a welcome mail from your hosting service company.

In that welcome mail, you can find the hosting server nameservers.

My hosting company provided four nameservers. You can see I added them on the Edit Nameservers field.

You will see only two fields to enter your custom nameservers by default. But you can add more fields by clicking the Add Nameserver icon.

Click the Save button to save the nameservers you entered.

  6. Confirm and Continue

You need to confirm the nameserver changes. GoDaddy will ask for your consent to make the changes in effect.

As you can see in the screenshot, you should click the checkbox. That will send the message you consent to update the Nameserver for the selected domain.

Here I checked the checkbox. Now the Continue button is clickable. Don’t be scared of the warning, “Changing nameservers is risky, and could potentially lead to your website disappearance from public view”!

You should click the Continue button to complete the process.

  7. Check the verification message and wait

After clicking the Continue button, GoDaddy will show you a message like it below.

Hang tight – we’re updating your nameservers, so you can’t edit your DNS settings until that’s completed.

Now is the boring part. GoDaddy may take up to 48 hours to make the changes. Till then, you will see the default nameservers under the DNS Record.

GoDaddy may send you an e-mail once the nameserver update is successful. Till then, your WordPress website will not be available to the public.
